There have been complaints of grain dust released into the air during the loading and unloading of ships and trucks at the Goderich Elevator. A number of West Street residents have allegedly contacted the Ministry of the Environment. This has resulted in vessels being turned away from Goderich Port, and area farmers having to pay the extra freight to load their product in Hamilton. Goderich Chief Administrative Officer Larry McCabe says the Town has heard nothing official on the matter.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek has been a vocal critic of this commercial interference. The equipment used in the loading process is supplied by the firm Parrish and Heimbecker, which has 108 years in the industry. Coincidentally, P&H recently invested six million dollars in upgrading its loading facilities in the Steel City.
