With summer just around the corner, safety on the water should be top-of-mind for local boaters. A volunteer group with the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, is encouraging local boaters to take the time to inspect their boats and plan their trips to avoid trouble on the water.Unit Leader Paul Kerwin says simple tips like ensuring life jackets fit properly and electronics are charged, can all make a difference in an emergency.

He says to always pack extra food, water and essential medical supplies and medications in case of boat trouble. Ensure fuel and oil levels are up and check-in with loved ones before heading out.
