The OPP wants to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer, so they are warning motorist that more children will be out playing and riding bicycles in neighborhoods and streets. Tips for parents, pedestrians, and cyclists to keep in mind include wearing a bicycle helmet, especially anyone under the age of 18 as it is the law, avoid texting and walking or biking, don't wear headphones as you cannot hear vehicles. Other tips include see and be seen, make eye contact with drivers, wear visible colours especially at night, have reflectors on bikes, use sidewalks, never cross where vehicles may not see you, and only cross when it is safe to do so. Police remind cyclists that bicycles are defined as vehicles according to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, and they belong on the road. For those passing cyclist ensure that at least a meter is left between a vehicle and a bike before passing.
