7/17/2017 12:45:38 PM

The Ontario Provincial Police continue to warn residents about the CRA Scam, as more reports continue to come in. How the scam works is a potential victim is contacted by phone, email, or text, and the sender will claim they are from the CRA and insist that personal information is needed to receive a tax refund or benefit payment. Information requested will be things like a Social Insurance Number, credit card number, bank account number or passport.
In other instances, the scammers will try and us intimidation to scare potential victims into providing their personal information.
Police says that if it sounds fishy then it probably is, adding the CRA already has your information, and they would never request pre-paid credit cards, or music download cards as a tax payment. If you have fallen victim to this scam contact police, but if you have received a call, text or email report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visit http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
