Following a fatal fire in Oshawa and three local fires the South Huron Fire Department is reminding everyone to ensure they have working smoke and CO alarms and an escape plan.
Fire Chief Andrew Baird said in a statement that "fires move so fast that you may have less than 60 seconds to safely escape a fire, so early warning is crucial to survival. Some tips from the fire department include: installing CO and smoke alarms outside of all sleeping areas and test regularly, have an escape plan with two ways out of each room if possible, choose a meeting place outside, practice your plan and once you are out stay out. The department also recommends having specialized plans for those families with special needs members, and if you require specialized plans when you live in an apartment, notify your landlord.
