Provincial Police are deeply saddened and disappointed to announce that 2017 marked one of the worst years in recent history for fatalities on and off the road. 343 people died on OPP-patrolled roads in over 68 thousand collisions, with inattentive and speed related driving being the biggest causes (83 inattentive related, 75 speed related). 2017 also saw the high number of motorcycle deaths in ten years with 48. Another ten year high was 91 deaths in 76 collisions involving commercial transport trucks. Marine fatalities sadly reached an eight-year high for fatalities with 31 people dying with falling overboard being the leading contributing factor. Snowmobile deaths in 2017 reached an all-time high with 29 deaths, with primary causes being excessive speed, loss of control and driver inattention. There were less pedestrian deaths with only 27, down 12 from 2016, and the same amount of deaths on off-road vehicles as 2016 with 22.
