HURON COUNTY FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTION CENTER COMMENTS ON RECENT GOVERNMENT CUTS
8/8/2018 11:06:21 AM

Last week (on August 1) the Ontario Progressive Conservative government announced that they are cutting the funding to the Ontario basic income pilot program. The government also announced they were reducing funding increases to social programs like Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program. Executive Director of the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Center, Mary Ellen Zielman says it was disappointing to hear that the Provincial government stopped the basic income pilot and reduced social assistance rates.

Zielman says cutting back on rates and income will just make things worse.

She adds that there is lots of room for the government to assist with people on fixed incomes by helping with their income rates, but says the Distribution Centre has been blessed by the Huron County council who has supported the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre. Locally those in need can call 211 or go to their local food bank or aid agency for support. Anyone looking to donate to the Distribution Centre can go to huroncountyfoodbank.org
