Betty Hendriks is a retired registered nurse living in Goderich.
In 2014, she started a garden at the Huron County Museum and Gaol as part of an exhibit displaying food that was grown and served to prisoners.
It was during a Behind the Bars event in 2017 that Betty created a second garden located outside the museum after a number of children could not identify the vegetables.
The gardens not only were there to educate people, they were also there to grow food for the local food banks in Goderich.
Since the start of the pandemic, the museum has been closed to the public and Betty had to maintain the two gardens by herself.
Betty says she grew up on a farm and enjoys doing the hard work in planting, watering, and picking the food.
She says it great to see the smiles on people’s faces when drops off the fresh produce at the food bank.
Betty also works at the COVID-19 vaccination clinic in Goderich and teaches courses in the Personal Services Worker program at Fanshawe College.
She says she was hired by Huron Perth Public Health to help deliver the vaccines and it was a super experience seeing people come in and get their shot.
