A union is speaking out against the planned closure of a Wingham auto parts manufacturer that has been in the community for more than a century – saying that it will cost 250 people their livelihoods.
In a statement issued on Monday (May 29), Unifor slammed overseas company Wescast, saying that the closure violates commitments made by the company.
The completely unexpected closure will be a massive blow to the community, as Wingham only has a population of about 3000 people.
Wescast was purchased by a Chinese company in 2013, and will be sourcing the parts from other companies within China.
The announced closure comes amid massive investments by the provincial and federal governments in electric vehicle manufacturing, with $13 billion of incentives for a battery plant in St. Thomas, and a similar plant currently being constructed in Windsor.
