If you’ve ever felt like the waters of Lake Huron are advancing – you’re not alone.
Coastal Restoration Technician with the Lake Huron Coastal Centre Holly Westbrook says that although erosion is completely normal, it’s currently happening at an accelerated pace,
Through the removal of vegetation, and several other factors, the coastline is vulnerable to instability.
Westbrook says that although we all know the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – with reference to coastal erosion, retreat is the 4th R. Give the shoreline the space it needs to be it’s own ecosystem.
Westbrook says that as individuals, we can make daily choices to maintain a healthy coastal ecosystem – don’t disturb dunes unnecessarily, and if you’re fortunate enough to own lakefront property, you have a special responsibility,
At the end of the day, Westbrook says that the thing that will help reduce erosion the most, is also the most controversial,
Westbrook says that although we all know the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – with reference to coastal erosion, retreat is the 4th R. Give the shoreline the space it needs to be it’s own ecosystem.
