South Huron District High School is unveiling a mural tomorrow (June 21st) marking National Indigenous People’s Day.
Knowledge keeper Christin Dennis (whose Anishinaabe name is Fast Moving Cloud) says that he has been trying to teach students to appreciate the culture,
Dennis says that working on art creates an opportunity for the students to connect with the culture,
Although the students have been working on the mural since the beginning of the semester, the project has been several years in the making, with some delays due to COVID.
Art teacher Gina Harris says that her class really leaned into the opportunity,
She also said that collaborating with Dennis was absolutely crucial to the special connection that the students had with the project,
The students and Dennis worked to include various visual representation of the Anishinaabe in South Huron on the mural like the medicine wheel, the buffalo, and Ojibwe Spirit Horses.
