The mentors featured at the event
Avon Maitland District School Board hosted “The Real Deal on Skilled Trades” event on June 15 – the annual offering aims at attracting young women to skilled trades, by hosting workshops and connecting them to female mentors.
Offered through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (or OYAP), the goal of the event was to promote the top 14 skilled trades where women are underrepresented.
34 students from AMDSB high schools attended, and head from a variety of panelists, all of whom are women in trades working in Huron and Perth Counties.
Grade 10 student from Listowel District High School, Lily Armstrong, felt that hearing from the mentors was really meaningful for her. “Listening to the mentors and hearing how they got into the trades was helpful because it gave me an idea of what my next steps should be.”
