The shortage of housing in Ontario has become a prominent topic of discussion, and it is no different in South Huron. Local government officials are actively working to combat the housing shortage in the region.
Mayor of South Huron George Finch says that in the last four years, his council has approved seven new developments, boasting over 900 housing units. He says that this gap is something that most policy makers didn’t anticipate,
Shortfalls in housing are affecting more than just prospective newcomers to the area, it’s also starting to take it’s toll on employers – creating gaps in the labour market,
Unfortunately, the going price for homes or rent is outside of the municipality’s purview, however, Mayor Finch says that they are trying to attract developers to create more options for starter homes, and retirees – allowing more people to enter the market and upsize or downsize as suits their needs.
They’re making South Huron attractive to developers by maintaining high standards of infrastructure, and a variety of amenities like hospitals and schools to create well rounded, attractive communities with a variety of services available.
To help support council’s efforts to mitigate the housing crisis here in South Huron, Mayor Finch says that members of the public should keep in mind that this isn’t just about the people that live here right now,
There are projects currently on the table at council that are working to further this effort, including a retirement home currently in the works, alongside several housing developments throughout the area.
