Sports for young people don’t get very far without a volunteer’s spirit – and this is one that local skating coach Heidi Klopp possesses in spades.
With her strong connection to the Bluewater Zurich and Exeter Skating Club, her love for figure skating began at a young age, and she has been actively involved in the sport ever since. As a figure skater herself, Klopp’s journey into coaching started when she became a program assistant in her club at the age of 10. Over the years, she observed her coaches interacting with young skaters and teaching them the joy of skating, which inspired her to take up coaching as a potential career path.
Heidi is a firm believer in the power of sports, particularly figure skating, as a positive influence on young people’s mental health. Having experienced the benefits firsthand, she understands the importance of providing a creative outlet on the ice for those who may not be interested in other winter sports like hockey. Klopp emphasizes the role of sports in helping individuals, especially youngsters, to manage their anxiety and channel their excess energy in healthy ways.
As a coach, Klopp takes pride in contributing to the growth and continuity of the skating community in her region. Despite only having coached for around six to seven years, she has successfully filled the shoes of retiring coaches and played a crucial role in keeping the local skating clubs active and thriving. Heidi’s commitment to her students’ progress and the potential she sees in her community inspire her to aim for even greater accomplishments in the future.
For those interested in coaching, Klopp offers valuable advice to start by volunteering with local clubs and experiencing coaching on a smaller scale. By engaging in volunteer work, aspiring coaches can assess their interest and passion for the role before committing to coaching courses.
Klopp’s dedication, mentoring abilities, and positive impact on her community make her a valuable asset to the world of figure skating coaching. Through her efforts, she continues to make a positive difference in the lives of young skaters and contribute to the vibrant figure skating community in her region.
