Lambton Shores Fire Department responded to a battery fire recently
Lambton Shores Fire Department is shedding light on the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries following a recent emergency call about a battery fire.
Acting Fire Chief David McLean emphasized, “Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere now, so knowing how to properly use and handle these batteries is more important than ever. They store a significant amount of energy in a compact space, making them susceptible to overheating, fires, or even explosions.”
To enhance safety, the Lambton Shores Fire Department offers these essential tips:
1. Use only the battery designed for your device.
2. Use the charging cord that came with your device.
3. Avoid charging devices on flammable surfaces like beds or couches.
4. Unplug the device when the battery reaches full capacity.
5. Charge batteries within the temperature range of 0°C to 40°C.
6. Charge larger devices like e-bikes and e-scooters in a dry, flat area away from direct sunlight.
7. Store batteries away from potential fire hazards.
8. Purchase and use only devices listed by qualified testing laboratories.
9. Always adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions.
McLean also advised residents to be on the lookout for signs of problematic batteries, such as unusual odors, color changes, excess heat, deformation, leaks, or strange noises during charging.
