As we enter the colder months, the specter of flu season looms once again.
According to Erica Jensen – Manager of Quality, Patient Safety and Infection Control at the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA), flu season traditionally kicks off in the fall and extends into the spring.
To help prevent the spread of various illnesses, Jensen emphasizes the importance of handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and, most importantly, staying home when sick.
However, there’s a silver lining on the horizon – with a new COVID vaccine, flu vaccine, and an RSV vaccine on the horizon.
Jensen strongly recommends getting the flu vaccine, especially for vulnerable populations, and ensuring eligible individuals receive the COVID booster shot.
In terms of local efforts, the HPHA is collaborating with other hospitals to implement safety measures.
As we brace ourselves for the cold season, Jensen’s advice is clear: Stay informed, practice good hygiene, and get vaccinated. By taking these steps, we can navigate flu season with resilience and care.
