Lambton Public Health (LPH) has issued a warning regarding a potential blue-green algae bloom in the Ausable River, near the Grand Bend Yacht Club in Lambton Shores.
This advisory comes in response to samples collected yesterday (on October 3) at the Grand Bend Yacht Club, which are currently undergoing analysis at a lab.
Blue-green algae, scientifically known as cyanobacteria, can pose health risks including skin irritation, eye discomfort, gastrointestinal issues, headaches, and even more severe conditions like liver damage.
It’s crucial for residents in the affected areas to seek medical attention if they feel any symptoms.
To ensure safety, Lambton Shores residents are advised to take the following precautions:
1. Avoid Water Contact: Do not use the river water for drinking, cooking, bathing, swimming, or any water-related activities. Even boiling the water or relying on private water systems will not eliminate the toxins.
2. Skin Contact: If skin contact occurs, promptly wash with soap and clean water to remove any algae residues.
3. Fish Consumption: Be cautious about consuming fish from the affected area, as toxins can accumulate in fish and shellfish. Avoid consuming organs like liver and kidneys, and take care not to cut them during filleting.
Residents seeking more information about the algae bloom’s location and the ongoing sampling process can contact the MECP Spills Action Centre at 1-800-268-6060. Additionally, for further details and guidance, visit the MECP’s website or reach out to Lambton Public Health at 519-383-8331 or 1-800-667-1839.
