In a small town like Exeter, it’s not every day that local students make waves in the world of documentary filmmaking. However, that’s precisely what’s happening as students from South Huron District High School, have been chosen to be part of an exciting documentary project titled “Plastic People” – shooting here in town today!
Eco Exeter, a student-led environmental group, is dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly alternatives in their community. Their efforts include initiatives such as “bring your own mug” days in partnership with local restaurants, distributing reusable straws and produce bags, and much more.
myFM talked to students Sophia Buckman, the Treasurer & Secretary of Eco Exeter, and Bria McCann, the Social Media Representative.
When asked how these local students got involved in the documentary, Sophia explained they had inside connections.
Their motivation for participating in the documentary is deeply rooted in their passion for making a positive impact. Sophia emphasized that they want to put their name out there and raise awareness about the environment. Bria added that they believe small actions can cumulate in big change.
The documentary “Plastic People” will address the pressing issue of plastics and microplastics in the water. To contribute to its message, the students are planning to visit Hansen’s Independent Grocer to hand out reusable produce bags to shoppers. They aim to raise awareness about the plastics people use and even plan to hold a raffle draw for those who bring their own reusable items.
Balancing their academic commitments with environmental activism is no small feat. Sophia shared that her involvement was part of a big picture outlook.
Bria, who has been part of the eco-friendly movement since grade 8 (three years ago), was inspired by her older sister.
“Plastic People” is not just a local project; it will be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival and other festivals worldwide in the fall of 2024. Then, in late 2024, it will air as a special on CBC’s “The Nature of Things.”
This documentary promises to be a beacon of hope in a world grappling with plastic pollution, showcasing real people making a difference and inspiring change. Exeter and its passionate students are set to make their mark on the world stage.
