Local students from South Huron District High School have caught the eye of documentary film makers on a journey around the world to trace the impacts of micro-plastics.
An upcoming film, titled “Plastic People,” focuses on the alarming issue of microplastics contaminating our waters and bodies – and was shooting in Exeter on Friday. Amid the sobering message, the documentary takes a turn for the hopeful with the inclusion of “Eco Exeter,” a student-led environmental group from South Huron District High School.
“Plastic People” is the brainchild of director Ben Addelman, who revealed that their journey took them around the world, from to plastic factories in Texas to laboratories in the UK where blood tests were conducted to detect microplastics.
They sought uplifting stories of individuals making a difference. Enter Eco Exeter, a shining example of grassroots environmental activism.
Liam Buckman, a 12th-grade student and the vice-president of Eco Exeter, expressed his delight at the recognition. He emphasized that even the smallest efforts count in the battle against plastic pollution.
Eco Exeter’s initiatives, which include “bring your own mug days,” providing reusable straws, and distributing produce bags, have not gone unnoticed by the community. Hansen’s Your Independent Grocer has embraced their cause, participating in events to distribute reusable produce bags. Buckman highlighted the importance of involving youth in environmental activism, as it inspires the community and demonstrates that positive change is possible.
The spotlight on Eco Exeter at Hansen’s Your Independent Grocer on Friday morning is just a glimpse of the recognition they deserve.
As “Plastic People” debuts in 2024 and screens at prestigious festivals, their efforts serve as an inspiring example of local environmental action with global implications.
