A local commercial property transaction is in the spotlight following some concerned citizens complaints to Bluewater council last Monday (January 15).
Rhonda Payne, representing seven homeowners on Moore Court, expressed their concerns about a property on Moore Court – previously known as Brentwood on the Beach, a bed and breakfast that ceased operations in 2018.
Despite efforts to engage with the municipality, Payne highlighted the lack of due diligence by the council. She questioned the ease with which the property’s commercial use was grandfathered through the sale, without consideration of its impact on the community.
Payne explained that the residents learned in early July that the property, initially listed as a residential property, was sold as a commercial one. This revelation prompted the residents to reach out to Councilor Tyler Hessel, Deputy Mayor Becker, and Mayor Klopp, and have been continually in discussion with staff.
Payne emphasized that, in the five years since the business operated as a bed and breakfast, there has been no business signage, and six property transactions occurred without an active business.
A one-on-one meeting with CAO Laurie Spence Bannerman on October 11th, subsequent delays and closed-door sessions left residents feeling unheard.
Council’s resolution coming out of closed session on November 20th to monitor and document the property’s current use was reportedly the result of legal consultation, a discussion which Mayor Klopp referred to in last Monday’s meeting.
