A resolution submitted by the Municipality of Tweed was supported at South Huron Council last Monday (January 15).
The resolution highlighted the escalating demands on municipalities for services and infrastructure maintenance, exacerbated by the rising cost of living. The text emphasized the historical role of federal and provincial partnerships in alleviating financial burdens on small municipalities, enabling crucial projects to safeguard existing infrastructure.
Council members expressed concern over limited access to funding, primarily reliant on municipal taxes. The resolution, supported by South Huron Council, calls for urgent lobbying efforts directed at federal and provincial representatives. The aim is to bring attention to the critical need for reinstating these funding agreements, which have played a vital role in municipal planning.
During the council discussion, CAO Rebekah Msuya-Collison acknowledged that staff thought the motion was worth supporting.
Councillor Neeb was the first to support the motion, highlighting recent cuts.
The resolution received unanimous support, with council members recognizing the urgency of diversifying funding sources to maintain essential services without overburdening property taxpayers.
