Many Zurich locals were in for a rude awakening when they got their gas bill this month.
Local Marie Ward said that while she is on a stable billing option that is offered by Enbridge, someone that she knows received an unexpected $300 bill this month.
Ward noted that January, historically a month when people have less disposable income, is now compounded by the burden of unexpectedly high gas bills.
Ward shared her experience with Enbridge Gas’s Equal Monthly Payment Plan (EMPP), a budgeting solution where customers pay a fixed amount monthly. While providing stability, it can lead to overpayment. However, Ward mentioned receiving a credit for overpayment, alleviating the financial strain temporarily.
She said that she switched to the equal monthly payments after receiving a surprising bill last year.
Natasha Carr, a Communications Advisor from Enbridge Gas, outlined alternatives for customers to avoid surprises, including self-submitting meter readings and enrolling in the Equal Monthly Payment Plan.
While Enbridge claims to check meters every other month, unsafe travel conditions or obstructions can lead to months being missed, during which usage is estimated based on past trends.
As Zurich residents grapple with these unexpected bills in the midst of a recession, questions arise about the impact on households already facing financial challenges.
