Young people have the opportunity to raise money for their community, while also getting creative – Habitat for Humanity Canada’s National Writing Contest will provide $10 for your local Habitat with every entry to their “Meaning of Home” creative writing contest.
Now in its seventh year, the contest targets students in grades 4-6, urging them to express their thoughts on the concept of home.
That was Heather Glenister, the Resource Development Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Huron County.
For every story submitted, $10 is allocated to Habitat Huron County, contributing to the construction of homes for local families in need. This is a great way for children to give back to a local cause.
The national winners will secure a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat, along with an iPad and a celebratory pizza party for the entire class. Additionally, nine runners-up will receive $10,000 grants for their local Habitat.
She says that children are more aware than many realise.
She says that not only is it inspiring to hear what children value in a home, but it’s a good opportunity to start conversations about the difficulties facing many families today.
For those interested in participating, head to the meaningofhome.ca website – the deadline for submissions is February 23.
