At Wednesday morning’s (February 7th) Huron County Council meeting, councillors were vocal about the pressing need for fiscal reform in Ontario.
CAO Meighan Wark emphasized the shared challenges faced by municipalities across the province, with increasing demands placed on local government.
She stressed the importance of dialogue with the province and outlined the need to educate the provincial government about the financial constraints faced by municipalities and explore potential solutions collaboratively.
Mayor of Bluewater Paul Klopp emphasized the challenges posed by inflation, rising interest rates, and provincial policies. He urged for a proactive approach in budgeting and advocated for a stronger stance in advocating for municipal interests.
He also cited recent interactions with provincial officials at the ROMA convention, and some difficult lines of questioning that were brought to the table.
Council supported the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s actions to initiate a comprehensive social and economic prosperity review to address the pressing fiscal challenges facing municipalities across Ontario.
