On Monday, April 8th, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America. During a total solar eclipse, the moon comes between the sun and earth, completely blocking the sun’s face. This causes the sky to darken, similar to dawn or dusk. In the past, eclipses have led to large crowds gathering in prime viewing areas.
OPP is urging Ontario residents and tourists to prioritize road safety when traveling to planned solar eclipse events. It’s crucial for drivers to share the road safely, especially in areas with high traffic volumes due to large gatherings.
Drivers heading to areas hosting solar eclipse events should check local news and websites for traffic advisories and other relevant information, such as detours and parking details.
Here are some safety tips for drivers during the solar eclipse event:
Keep vehicle headlights on.
Avoid wearing eclipse glasses while driving.
Refrain from taking photos or videos of the eclipse while driving.
Never stop on the roadway or shoulder to view the eclipse.
Exit the road and park safely away from traffic to view the eclipse.
Be mindful of increased pedestrian traffic.
The OPP is dedicated to ensuring road safety during planned solar eclipse events, but they also rely on motorists to drive safely and follow traffic laws.
