As electronic devices continue to permeate daily life, the challenge of responsibly disposing of electronic waste, or e-waste, has become increasingly pressing.
Student Trustee Nathan Bean says that this year, Avon Maitland District School Board is marking Earth Week in a special way.
Throughout this week (Monday, April 15th to Friday the 19th), students can jump start their spring cleaning, by bringing their unused electronics for recycling.
Gray bins provided by Green Tech, a company specializing in e-waste recycling, will be stationed outside the participating schools for drop-off. Accepted items include laptops, old phones, broken charging cables, batteries, and even printers.
Bean emphasized the importance of e-waste recycling, citing the significant environmental impact of improperly disposed electronics.
He further highlighted the valuable resources, such as copper, zinc, cobalt, and even gold, that can be reclaimed through recycling.
The initiative not only addresses the immediate need for e-waste recycling but also serves as a testament to the commitment of young people to environmental activism – one that Bean says is close to the hearts of young people.
Members of the public can drop off their e-waste at South Huron District High School, F. E. Madill, Central Huron Secondary School, or Stratford District Secondary School on Friday, April 19th from 9am – 3pm.
