Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Lambton County effective today, (Tuesday, May 21), due to hot and humid weather conditions in the region. This advisory, which is expected to remain in effect until tomorrow, is issued during early heat episodes that impact significant areas but do not meet the full criteria for a heat warning.
Dr. Dueck, the Medical Officer of Health, emphasized, “Conditions do not meet heat warning criteria but could pose health risks, particularly to those vulnerable to the heat who are not yet acclimatized to the warmer weather.” Vulnerable groups include the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include rapid breathing, dizziness or fainting, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, extreme thirst, and unusually dark yellow urine. Those experiencing these symptoms should move to a shaded or air-conditioned area, hydrate, and rest.
In cases of heat stroke, characterized by high body temperature, unconsciousness, confusion, or the absence of sweating, call 911 immediately.
Community members are urged to check on friends, family, and neighbors who might be at risk. Preventive measures include:
- Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water.
- Avoiding strenuous activities between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. when the sun is strongest.
- Seeking shade and wearing sunscreen, lightweight clothing, and sunglasses if outdoors.
- Consulting healthcare providers if on medication or with existing health conditions.
- Ensuring vulnerable individuals stay cool and hydrated.
Additional tips include taking cool showers or baths, using wet towels, and keeping curtains closed to block out the sun. Avoid heavy meals and using ovens to prevent adding heat indoors. Never leave children or pets in parked cars and ensure pets have access to cool locations and fresh water.
