Huron Perth Public Health has issued suspension notices to a number of students who have fallen behind on their immunizations, effective tomorrow (Thursday, May 23).
Karen Bergin-Payette, HPPH Immunizations Manager, highlighted the critical importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage to ensure community health and safety.
She says that the lower vaccine coverage isn’t sufficient to provide herd immunity for those that cannot be vaccinated.
The drop in immunization rates is attributed to several factors, including reduced availability of appointments with primary care providers and a focus on COVID-19 vaccinations. Bergin-Payette emphasized the dual challenge of addressing both vaccine hesitancy and the logistical delays caused by the pandemic.
The move was announced several months ago, and provided two options to parents, both of which Bergin-Payette says are valid.
Bergin-Payette praised the collaboration with local school boards and the proactive response from parents – with many contacting the health unit to update records ahead of the deadline.
The records provide a valuable resource to the health unit in the event of an outbreak.
Huron Perth Public Health encourages all parents to review their children’s immunization records and make necessary updates to protect the broader community. For more information, visit the Huron Perth Public Health website or contact their offices directly.
