It’s National AccessAbility Week, and in Huron County, an increase in awareness of the importance of accessibility has been core to the local advisory committee.
Running from May 26 to June 1, 2024, this year’s National AccessAbility Week carries the theme “Forward Together: Inclusion for All”
Throughout 2023, the Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee spearheaded numerous initiatives, including conducting comprehensive site reviews, hosting the Huron County Accessibility Awards, and providing updates to local government about regulatory changes.
Their efforts extended to education campaigns, digital accessibility enhancements, and the ongoing refinement of accessibility guidelines in partnership with the Planning and Development Department.
“The County of Huron remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering inclusivity and accessibility,” affirmed Sahil Kaushal, the County’s Inclusion, Accessibility, Equity, and Diversity (IDEA) Specialist. “We’ve made substantial progress in improving accessibility across our properties and communities, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the HCAAC and our dedicated residents.”
Recognizing the collective responsibility in creating a truly accessible environment, residents are encouraged to contribute through various avenues, such as raising awareness, advocating for inclusivity, and supporting businesses that champion accessibility.
According to Statistics Canada, 27% of Canadians aged 15 and older face limitations due to disabilities.
