It’s crucial to prioritize staying cool and safe during these hot days.
Manager of Safe Water, Tobacco Enforcement & Vector Borne Disease programs at the Middlesex-London Health Unit, Andrew Powell says heat warnings are put in place for a reason and they should not be ignored.
- Keep Hydrated: Maintaining proper hydration is paramount in combating the heat. Drink ample water throughout the day, regardless of thirst cues. Steer clear of excessive caffeine or alcohol, as they can exacerbate dehydration. Incorporate hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables into your diet.
- Seek Air-Conditioned Spaces: When temperatures rise, seek refuge in air-conditioned environments such as malls, libraries, or indoor arenas. If air conditioning isn’t available at home, consider spending time in public areas during peak heat hours. Many communities are expected to open cooling centers to provide relief.
- Create a Cool Environment: Transform your living space into a cool haven by closing curtains or blinds during the hottest periods to block direct sunlight. Utilize fans or portable air coolers to enhance air circulation and maintain indoor comfort.
- Dress Appropriately: Opt for loose, lightweight clothing crafted from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Choose light-colored attire that reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it. Don’t forget to shield yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when venturing outside.
- Minimize Outdoor Activity: Avoid outdoor activities during the peak heat hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, seek shaded areas and take regular breaks in cool, air-conditioned spaces to prevent overheating.
- Cool Off with Water: Take refreshing showers or baths throughout the day to lower body temperature. Employ wet towels or misting fans for instant relief from the heat. If feasible, indulge in a swim at a nearby pool or beach to beat the heat.
- Opt for Light, Cool Foods: Embrace light, cooling meals that require minimal cooking. Enjoy revitalizing salads, chilled fruits, and hydrating snacks like cucumbers and watermelon. Steer clear of heavy, greasy foods that can induce sluggishness in hot weather.
If you have any health concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider or visit a local Emergency Department. In emergencies, dial 9-1-1 immediately.
