The Huron OPP Marine Unit is back on patrol this summer, working to ensure safety on Lake Huron.
According to Constable Craig Soldan, a previous 17-foot harbour craft was ill suited for the challenging conditions of Lake Huron.
The new vessel, based at the Maitland Valley Marina in Goderich, allows the OPP to respond swiftly to incidents, extending their patrol area from Grand Bend to Amberley Beach.
Provincial Constable Jason Sibley said the majority of their focus is on safety inspections and enforcement.
The officers check for essential safety equipment such as life jackets, flares, and fire extinguishers, ensuring compliance with regulations across various types of watercraft. They also monitor for alcohol consumption, enforce licensing requirements, and ensure vessels are properly registered.
Constable Sibley says that it’s essential that operators are on top of maintenance and safety, and are prepared for any emergency.
Constable Soldan says that with increased patrols this year, the Marine Unit aims to correct misconceptions that the waters are unregulated.
The importance of being prepared for anything is especially important on the changeable waters of Lake Huron. Sibley and Soldan stressed the severe and unpredictable weather changes on the lake, which can quickly transform calm waters into dangerous conditions – if you’re heading out on the water this summer, make sure you’re ready for anything!
