Canada scores Gold at Paris Olympics: Christa Deguchi shines on Day 3

It’s day three of the 2024 Paris Olympics and Canada officially has their first Gold Medal Winner of the games in Christa Deguchi.

She is a Japanese-born Canadian judoka who won gold in the women’s 57 kg event at the games, making her the reigning Olympic champion.

As of 12:15pm on Monday July, 29th, Canada currently has 4 medal in total, 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Teen prodigy Summer McIntosh earned Canada its first medal on Saturday afternoon, taking silver in the women’s 400-metre freestyle.

Fencer Eleanor Harvey secured Canada’s second medal of the Paris Olympics on Sunday, defeating Italy’s Alice Volpi 15-12 to win bronze in the women’s individual foil. At 29, Harvey’s victory is Canada’s best-ever result in an individual fencing event.
Meanwhile, Canadian divers Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens took home bronze in the men’s 10m synchronized event to bring Canada’s medal count to three. The pair also snagged the country’s first-ever medal in the event. It’s also Canada’s first men’s diving medal since Alexandre Despatie’s three-metre springboard silver in 2008.
Moving on in the Olympics, Team Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team—Ellie Black, Shallon Olsen, Cassie Lee, Ava Stewart, and Aurélie Tran—has qualified for the women’s Olympic team final for the first time since London 2012. Ellie Black and Ava Stewart have advanced to the all-around final, while Shallon Olsen and Ellie Black have qualified for the vault final.

In Tahiti, Sanoa Dempfle-Olin placed third in her first round heat of the women’s surfing competition. As a result, she will advance to round two instead of moving directly to round three.

In a dramatic finish, the Canadian women’s soccer team secured a crucial 2-1 victory over France in a must-win match. Vanessa Gilles scored in the 12th minute of stoppage time to seal the win after France had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Jessie Fleming equalized for Canada in the 58th minute. With a six-point deduction due to a drone controversy, Canada needed this win to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive. They will also need to win their final group stage match against Colombia on Wednesday to advance.
