Phishing phone scams pretending to be a lottery are targeting seniors through landline calls. Recently, scammers contacted an elderly person, claiming they could buy lottery tickets with gift cards and win prizes. They asked the victim to buy $500 in gift cards and read the numbers over the phone, then asked for $2,000 more the next day.
The victim realized it was a scam and reported it to the police.
The OPP advises people not to share personal information or buy gift cards for unknown callers. Report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
