As of October 31, all licensed grocery and big-box stores across Ontario can sell beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink beverages. This completes Ontario’s plan to increase consumer convenience by expanding alcohol sales- and ahead of schedule.
Eligible convenience stores gained sales rights in September, following an initial grocery store expansion in July. This new market allows Ontario retailers to choose if, when, and how they wish to sell these products, providing flexibility and new business opportunities.
An interactive map has also been launched by the province to assist Ontarians in locating participating stores and outlets for returning empty bottles.
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy noted, “This marks a significant milestone,” as Ontario aligns its alcohol market with other provinces across Canada.
As of late October, approximately 4,700 convenience stores and 850 grocery stores including big box grocery stores have been licenced to sell beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink beverages, including in large pack sizes.
