The Huron Special Olympics program has launched a new Active Start program, offering kids ages 2 to 12 their first taste of sports and physical activity.
Jeff Charlesworth, Program Consultant for Special Olympics Ontario says this is the first step in building more inclusive programs in Huron County, with plans for future sports like soccer and basketball.
The program emphasizes movement, social skills, and self-confidence, and provides children with intellectual disabilities a safe space to explore sports.
This Active Start program in Huron County is just the beginning of building a strong, inclusive sports community for children with intellectual disabilities, encouraging them to embrace new challenges and find joy in physical activity.
Charlesworth hopes the program will grow, bringing more opportunities for these young athletes. Community support is essential, and volunteers are needed to help this program thrive.
