A snow squall warning is in effect for Goderich, Bluewater, and Southern Huron County, bringing challenging weather conditions today and into tonight.
Residents in the area can expect heavy snowfall, with accumulations ranging between 30 to 60 centimeters by Friday morning. In some areas, snowfall may exceed 60 centimeters if a single snow squall remains stationary for a prolonged period. The most intense snowfall rates could reach 5 to 10 centimeters per hour, accompanied by strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 70 kilometers per hour. These conditions will create very poor to zero visibility at times due to heavy snow and blowing snow.
The snow squalls, driven by Lake Huron, are predicted to persist through the night, making travel especially hazardous. Conditions can change dramatically within short distances, with clear skies shifting to heavy snow in a matter of kilometers. Rapid snow accumulation may cause significant challenges for drivers, and visibility can be severely reduced.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including slowing down while driving, watching for other vehicles, and being ready to stop when visibility is compromised. Public Safety Canada recommends having an emergency plan and preparing an emergency kit that includes essentials like drinking water, food, medicine, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit.
Stay safe and avoid non-essential travel during this period to minimize risks.
