Rain, Thaw, and Rising Waters: Ausable Bayfield Braces for Weekend Melt
Dec 28, 2024 | 11:18 AM
Weather forecasts suggest water levels in rivers and streams will start rising this weekend as temperatures increase and the snowpack begins to melt. Temperatures are predicted to reach up to 10 degrees Celsius over the weekend.
Recent snow surveys by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) show some areas still have over 50 millimetres of water in the snowpack. The combination of snowmelt and rainfall through December 31 will likely melt most of the snow, leading to higher water levels that will stay elevated into the new year. While watercourses may overflow their banks in low-lying areas, major flooding is not expected. The extent of flooding will depend on rainfall amounts, timing, and temperatures.
With the holidays approaching, everyone is urged to stay safe around water. Ice is unsafe, and care should be taken near rivers and streams. Slippery or unstable streambanks, snow-covered banks, and extremely cold water pose added risks.
This advisory remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, unless updated. The ABCA will monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
