Warm temperatures today, will continue melting the remaining snow. With rain moving in this morning and the ground already soaked, the extra water will quickly flow into streams and rivers, which are already running high.
Larger rivers are expected to overflow into their usual low-lying floodplain areas. Roads that often flood may be affected, but major flooding is not expected. Water levels in rivers will likely stay high until New Year’s Day.
In areas where snowbanks are still present, municipal workers should check for blocked drains or culverts that could cause drainage problems.
As the holiday break continues, it’s important to stay safe near water. All ice should be considered unsafe. Riverbanks are slippery and unstable, especially under drifted snow, and the water is extremely cold. These conditions create extra danger, so caution is advised.
