OPP has issued a warning about computer pop-up scams after seeing a rise in the Computer “Security Breach” Scam.
In November 2024, OPP recieved a report of a scam after a resident noticed a pop-up on their computer claiming there was a security breach. The message instructed them to call a specific number. When they called, the person on the line claimed to work for Microsoft. The victim allowed remote access to their computer and was told their financial information had been compromised.
The victim was then directed to withdraw $80,000 in cash from their bank and purchase over $240,000 worth of 100g gold bars from an online retailer. The gold was delivered to their home. Over two weeks, individuals came to the victim’s residence five times to collect the cash and gold.
Police urge the public to remain vigilant against fraud. If you receive an unexpected message or call requesting personal information like your address, banking details, or SIN number, do not respond. Legitimate organizations will not ask for payment through gift cards or unusual methods. Hang up and block the caller.
Signs of potential scams include messages sent at odd hours, spelling and grammar errors, a sense of urgency, generic company names, automated voices, or random links and attachments. Stay informed to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud.
