As we look to the new year, South Huron Mayor George Finch stopped by the myFM studio and highlighted the community’s accomplishments in 2024, reflecting on a year filled with resilience, collaboration, and growth.
This year, South Huron marked significant milestones in infrastructure and development. The Main Street reconstruction project, a $7 million endeavor, is nearing completion. The addition of pedestrian crossovers aims to enhance safety for residents, with one already installed at the bridge and another planned downtown at the Parkette.
Another major highlight was breaking ground on a 160-bed long-term care facility, the first of its kind in South Huron in over 35 years. Mayor Finch noted the importance of this development, which will serve the community for generations.
South Huron was also recognized for its commitment to accessibility. Renovations to the South Huron Recreation Centre earned the municipality an award for excellence in accessibility from the Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee.
Residents have also taken steps to improve quality of life. Mayor Finch expressed strong support for the proposal to build a dog park in Exeter. The initiative, led by local resident Abby Hannah, has received community backing and is under consideration by the council.
In addition, the community celebrated plans for a new medical clinic in Exeter, spearheaded by the South Huron Hospital Foundation. Mayor Finch praised the volunteers driving this project, calling them the backbone of the community.
Looking ahead to the new year, discussions about a new Dashwood Fire Hall are gaining momentum. Mayor Finch emphasized the importance of providing modern facilities for South Huron’s dedicated volunteer firefighters.
Housing and homelessness remain ongoing priorities, with the completion of a 20-unit affordable housing complex in Exeter standing out as a key achievement this year.
Reflecting on South Huron’s progress, Mayor Finch encouraged residents to remain grateful and united.
As 2025 continues, South Huron remains focused on growth, collaboration, and innovation, ensuring a bright future for all its residents.
