Nine-year-old Merrin Paff braved icy waters for the Polar Bear Dip, all for a heartfelt reason. After being asked by her mom’s friend, Merrin decided to join the daring challenge, raising $810 for Jessica’s House, a local hospice.
“I was kind of scared,” Merrin admitted, but the excitement and the cause kept her going. Instead of supporting her brother’s usual choice, Merrin wanted to switch things up this year, dedicating her efforts to Jessica’s House.
Her mom, Jen Paff, shared how proud the family is of Merrin’s determination.
Merrin wasn’t alone in her plunge. She was joined by five others this year, and she’s already planning to recruit more participants for next year’s dip. She’s especially excited that George Finch, the mayor of South Huron, has already committed to joining in January 2026.
Jenn noted that Merrin was very determined to do the plunge this year and is very proud of her efforts.
When asked if she had a message for others, Merrin shared her mom’s advice: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Merrin’s bravery and dedication have inspired others, and she’s already gaining attention from the community and beyond. With plans for an even bigger turnout next year, Merrin is proving that even the youngest among us can make a big difference.
