As the threat of U.S. tariffs looms, more people in Huron County are choosing to support local farmers and food producers. Chris Spaleta, Chair of the Board at Eat Local Huron, says the shift has been sudden but significant.
Eat Local Huron, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting consumers with local food, has seen an increase in demand. The organization helps farmers and food producers sell their products directly to people in the community. Spaleta calls it a win-win: local businesses thrive, and consumers get fresher, more nutritious food.
Spaleta noted there are many benefits to buying local.
The recent surge in customers has been linked to the approaching tariff deadline, which has since been postponed. However, with the issue expected to come up again in March, Spaleta believes the trend will continue.
Beyond the economic impact, Spaleta sees another unique benefit to eating local—building relationships with food producers. Eat Local Huron has organized “farm crawls,” allowing people to visit farms and meet the farmers behind their food.
Despite the circumstances that have led to the shift, Spaleta is thrilled to see more people supporting local food.
