Ontario Premier Doug Ford and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have agreed to meet in Washington on Thursday to discuss a renewed USMCA trade deal. As part of the talks, Ontario will suspend its 25 per cent surcharge on electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota.
Premier Doug Ford stated earlier this week that tariffs need to go.
The move comes amid heightened tensions, with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening tariffs on Canada’s auto industry and warning he would “permanently shut down” the sector if Ontario refused to back down.
