The Municipality of South Huron is preparing for a major reconstruction project on Victoria Street East in Exeter. The work will stretch from Main Street to the eastern end of Victoria Street, affecting key locations such as Exeter Elementary School, Relouw Early Childhood Learning Centre, and the South Huron Recreation Centre.
The project will include replacing the deteriorated road surface and curbs, upgrading sidewalks to improve accessibility, and installing new underground utilities such as storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and water mains. A crosswalk will also be added at the entrance to the South Huron Recreation Centre to improve pedestrian safety.
Construction will be carried out in three phases to reduce disruptions, especially near the schools. The first phase, from Main Street to Andrew Street, will begin in April and last until May. The second phase, from Andrew Street to the decorative pillars, will take place in June. The final phase, from the pillars to the end of Victoria Street, will happen between July and August while schools are on summer break. The last layer of asphalt will be applied in 2026 to complete the project.
To keep the community informed, the Municipality will hold a Public Open House on Monday, March 24th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the South Huron Municipal Office. Residents are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and learn more about the project.
Businesses along Victoria Street East will remain open during construction, and the Municipality is encouraging the public to continue supporting them. Regular updates on the project will be available through the Municipality’s website, and residents can sign up for email notifications.
For more information, residents can contact Don Giberson, General Manager of Infrastructure and Development, at 519-235-0310 ext. 230 or by email at project@southhuron.ca. The Victoria Street East reconstruction is a significant investment in Exeter’s infrastructure, aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and overall quality of life for the community.
