Recent heavy rainfall has caused major flooding in the Ausable Bayfield watershed, with rivers rising beyond their banks and flooding low-lying areas. Over the past 24 hours, the region received between 50 and 70 millimeters of rain, leading to dangerous conditions.
As of Thursday morning (April 3), small waterways have already peaked, but larger rivers are still rising and are expected to crest early Friday. Another 20-25 millimeters of rain is expected this weekend, which will extend flooding in affected areas but is not expected to make conditions worse.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is closely monitoring water levels at Parkhill Dam. The dam is currently holding back water to help reduce flooding downstream, and operations are set to begin this afternoon. The Cameron-Gillies diversion system is also in place to redirect floodwaters away from Parkhill. Dam operations are expected to continue through the weekend.
Officials urge residents to stay away from rivers and flooded areas. Despite warmer temperatures, the water remains extremely cold and fast-moving, creating dangerous conditions. Stream banks may also be unstable and slippery.
This flood warning remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7th, unless conditions change. ABCA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
