Running for the first time for a Ward 1 councilor in South Huron is Centralia born and raised Wendy McLeod-Haggit
McLeod-Haggit decided to run for council after the last Municipal election. Having one of the incumbents ask her why she wasn’t running, after answering questions the public had about council.
She tells myFM she has quite a few things on her agenda including housing.
McLeod-Haggit would also like to see more public transit in the area, review the Community Improvement plan, more transparency and accountability and review the Strategic plan.
McLeod-Haggit says Exeter has great growth happening but council needs to see what they have and what they can build on to help the growing population. When it comes to the Strategic Plan, she says it hasn’t been reviewed since 2015 and it needs the publics input.
In 2016, McLeod-Haggits youngest daughter attended Amethyst Demonstration School in London. There are only 3 schools in Ontario like it. There was talks of closing down the schools.
McLeod-Haggit was President of Parent Council at the time and says she and a few other people spearheaded the effort to save the schools. She says after countless visits with the Education Minister and the Child and Youth Advocate Office, they were successful. She says now the schools are thriving and attendance is at an all time high.
McLeod-Haggit says that lots of people have told her that stuff keeps getting taken away. Like the Huron Park Fire Department and the Centralia Community Centre. She says we need to build and revive our smaller communities.
