In a test of endurance and mental fortitude, Huron County Native Jason Kloss, recently undertook the daunting challenge of swimming 51 kilometers across Lake Ontario to raise funds for CAMH on August 11th.
The swim kicked off with an early start due to impending weather conditions. Kloss dove into the choppy waters off Niagara on the Lake. What initially appeared as mere river-lake convergence turned out to be a continual onslaught of 8-foot waves, making each stroke a struggle for breath and progress.
The journey was not without its awe-inspiring moments. Kloss recounted a breathtaking encounter with a massive 300-ft freight liner, a stark reminder of human insignificance in the vastness of the lake.
Despite the adversities, Kloss completed the first half of the swim in only 9 hours.
However, the second half proved to be a test of his limits. Battling fatigue and the increasingly frigid waters, Kloss found himself making minimal headway. As the hours passed and the distance seemed insurmountable, Kloss’s determination and optimism remained unwavering.
With only 13 kilometers remaining, after being awake for 24 hours and swimming for 18, he made the difficult decision to tap out.
Reflecting on the support he received, Kloss expressed gratitude for those who dedicated waves and kilometers to the cause. The camaraderie of his team, comprising over 20 individuals, was instrumental in providing guidance, support and encouragement throughout the journey.
Despite not reaching the shore, Kloss’s swim raised over $57,000 for CAMH, surpassing his initial goal. Looking ahead, his love for swimming remains undiminished – although he has no plans for another journey at this time.
