Public health agencies throughout the area have issued warnings following the detection of West Nile Virus throughout the last month – including confirmation from Huron Perth Public Health and Lambton Public Health.
Kaitlyn Kelly – Public Health Inspector with Huron Perth Public Health, says that West Nile, while relatively mild for most people, can cause real harm, or even death,
She said that people over fifty, or with existing immune conditions are most at risk for serious illness as a result of West Nile.
There’s been a surge in West Nile detections in the last month, but Kelly says that isn’t unusual for this time of year, and largely has to do with weather patterns,
You can take steps to protect yourself – along with wearing long, loose fitting clothing and repellent to prevent bugs from biting you,
Local public health agencies continue to trap and test mosquitoes to monitor the risk to the public, but the risk will naturally decline as the weather gets cooler.
