The Stephen Arena and South Huron Recreation Center celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, (November 4th) – with improvements to the facilities aiming to future proof them for years to come.
With a total budget of $2,343,255.35, the Stephen Township Arena now boasts a new cement floor and upgraded boards, offering year-round usability. The addition of new bleachers and seating on the north side of the building complements the arena’s heritage design.
The South Huron Recreation Center received a much-needed renovation with a budget of $5,347,000.00. The investment brought brand new change rooms, six for teams and one for officials, improving the overall experience for visitors. The viewing area was enhanced, allowing fans to get closer to the action, and an accessibility platform ensures that everyone can enjoy the games.
These renovations have been in the works for an extensive period, spanning at least five terms of council. Mayor of South Huron George Finch expressed his pride in completing the project, emphasizing the importance of maintaining these facilities.
Mayor Finch highlighted that recreation facilities play a crucial role in fostering a sense of community belonging. He also stressed the need for affordable recreation to accommodate all residents, regardless of their interests and income levels.
He says they’re not done investing in recreation in South Huron.
The last major investment in the South Huron Rec Center was in 2013, upgrading the ice refrigeration. However, capital improvements had not been made since 1978. The Stephen Arena, without a cement floor and with aging pipes, faced similar challenges. The investments were necessary to ensure the safety, functionality, continued use, and accessibility of these facilities.
With a commitment to affordability and inclusivity, South Huron’s revitalized rec centers are sure to become the heart of the community, fostering a strong sense of togetherness.
