The Zurich community is making sure that that no senior feels alone during the holidays.
Gillian Reilly, a social worker inspired by a similar program in Kitchener Waterloo, has brought a “Santa for Seniors” program to Zurich for the first time.
The idea is simple – recognizing that some seniors could be experiencing loneliness and isolation this holiday season, Gillian pairs them with caring community members to brighten their holiday season.
This initiative goes beyond financial support, focusing on the emotional well-being of seniors.
Gillian emphasized the importance of community members checking in on their elderly neighbors. She encourages simple acts of kindness, such as helping with groceries, to foster connections and combat the isolation that many seniors face, especially during the holiday season.
Isolation has always been a challenge for seniors, but has been especially challenging in the last few years due to the pandemic. Gillian recognizes the vital role of community support for the elderly in our community – whether it’s organizing outings, discussions, or a simple check-in, these efforts contribute to the overall well-being of seniors.
Gillian expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community response and encourages more nominations to ensure that Christmas cheer reaches every corner of Zurich.
Zurich residents are invited to participate by either volunteering for the program or nominating a senior who could benefit from the initiative. Nominations can be submitted to Gillian via email at santa4seniors@gmail.com or by calling/texting 519-569-9727 before December 1st.
